The other sex-abuse scandal

As the sex abuse scandal in the Catholic church continues to make headlines, a front-page story in today's Oklahoman says a public school teacher in Coyle "faces three counts of indecent exposure and eight counts of lewd acts to a child under age 16."

It's worth remembering a recent analysis by the Associated Press which found that "sexual misconduct plagues U.S. schools" and suggests that sexual misconduct among male schoolteachers is at least as common as among male priests. Indeed, a 2004 U.S. Department of Education study found that one in 10 public school students is sexually harassed or abused by a teacher or other school employee at some point between kindergarten and 12th grade.
